Everything You Need To Know About Pizhichil

Pizhichil, which literally means "squeezing", is a traditional ayurvedic treatment that combines two procedures, Snehana (oil therapy) and Swedana (steam therapy). Believed to be a royal treatment in ancient times, it is named "the king of ayurvedic therapies" and is also known as Sarvangha Dhara, Thaila Dhara, and Kaya Seka. Though Pizhichil involves a full body massage, it can also be done for specific parts called Ekanga Pizhichil or half of the body called Ardhanga Pizhichil. Further, as a part of Ayurveda, a holistic healing system, Pizhichil comes with a lot of benefits for the body and mind. However, consulting an experienced ayurvedic practitioner beforehand is recommended.

The Procedure

The ayurvedic body type or dosha of the receiver is determined before initiating Pizhichil. It helps choose the appropriate oil for the process according to the body type, as it varies from one person to another. Still, Dhanwantharam oil, Shatavari oil, Ksheerabala oil, etc are generally used.

At first, a steady stream of the prescribed oil is poured over the head and body constantly and massaged at the same time by two to four ayurvedic practitioners. The massage is performed in various positions such as sitting, lying on the back and stomach, as well as on either side of the body. The procedure goes on for about 60 to 90 minutes and requires approximately three to four litres of oil. The oil used is maintained at a lukewarm temperature during the process. Though a single session of Pizhichil gives better results, a minimum of seven sessions is recommended for maximum results. At times it is followed by Shirodhara considering the requirement of the person undergoing the therapy. The patient is given a warm water bath after Pizichil therapy.

Benefits Of Pizhichil

Apart from relaxing the body, Pizhichil soothes the mind as well. Besides, it improves blood circulation, reduces stress, and strengthens the body. And here are some of the other benefits it has to offer.

Rejuvenates Skin: It is a detox that eliminates the accumulated toxins from the body and dead cells from the skin. Further, it makes the skin glow since it increases blood flow. Ultimately, it leaves the skin rejuvenated.

Balances Vata: Vata imbalance leads to a number of disorders in the body, and Pizhichil assists in the treatment of such diseases by balancing Vata. Moreover, it relieves stiffness, inflammation, and weakness due to Vata related ailments.

Relieves Muscle Fatigue: It provides relief from muscle fatigue and helps in restoring muscular strength.

Alleviates Body Pain: Pizhichil helps relieve chronic pain due to injuries and stress. The herbs used in the procedure helps rebuild strength as well.

Reduces Nerve Weakness: It assists in managing nerve weakness and associated conditions by releasing tension from the nerves.

Manages Stress: It helps maintain good mental health by reducing stress and handles anxiety, depression, hypertension, mental fatigue, etc.

Treats Sexual Disorders: Pizhichil aids in the treatment of sexual disorders caused by various factors such as blocked blood vessels, damaged muscles by boosting circulation and strength.

Although Pizhichil is beneficial in so many ways, there are things to consider before undergoing this therapy. For instance, individuals with Kapha aggravation, indigestion, etc should restrain from getting the treatment. Furthermore, it is advised to avoid Pizhichil during pregnancy. And as mentioned before, a consultation with an expert ayurvedic practitioner is recommended to prevent adverse reactions.
